UNIBEN STUDENT SHOT IN THE HEAD AT SCHOOL SPORT COMPLEX

A 200level Mathematics student of the University of Benin known as Snazzy was shot in the head by an unknown gun man around 2pm yesterday afternoon during the biometrics registration held in the university sports complex.

Eye witnesses say the gunman dropped the gun and disappeared into the crowd before he could be identified. Snazzy was immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Don't know for sure if he died or survived. Will update as soon as I have confirmation.

OBIORA OBIWON RELEASES TESTIFY ON HIS BIRTHDAY

The question making rounds around Social Media circles lately has been “Where is Obiwon?”. Finally, it gets an answer on the 9th of June 2013, the 36th birthday of the r’n’b-singer-turned-urban-gospel-minister, Obiora Obiwon.

In response to enthusiasts and lovers of his music, Obiwon returns as recording artiste with a techno-infused HipHop song entitled “Testify”. On the song he elicits the help of gospel music elite, Mike Abdul of the Midnight Crew, who adds a fuji-flavoured cameo to the already infectious groove. On the production, Obiora continues to synergize with Phat-E – credited with “Obi Mu O” the original version and the remix and the inspirational “F.a.t.h.e.r 2.0” single. The result is an undeniable jam filled with zest and celebration over strongly spirited but yet simple faith-based lyrics.

Obiwon who announced a full-time gospel music ministry five years ago in 2008 has steadily impacted the gospel music and Christian events scene nationwide with his “The Rebirth Band” and continues to play roles in the wedding events scene, roles not often showcased in mainstream media.

Expect to hear much more from Obiwon in coming weeks and months as he finalizes a long overdue third album.

WHEN MEN CARRY THEIR GIRLFRIENDS HAND BAG, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

In the picture of Zoe Saldana with her new boyfriend, he is carrying her handbag and that got me thinking. One often hears stories of men who say they would rather die than carry their wife's or girlfriend's handbag. Then there are those who don't really mind or wouldn't but fear being teased or thought to be less of a man if they did that.

A friend spoke of how after her husband helped her carry her handbag - she was carrying their baby and had to answer a phone call so handed hubby her coach tote - her own father who had also been there warned them seriously. She had to respectfully disagree with her dad, and her hubby spoke up too. The father was worried about gender roles, appearances of respect and what people would say. The couple on their part tried to emphasize that what mattered was their relationship and whether they understood each other. He was just helping.

Now, I don't want to make it seem like carrying a woman's handbag is like the ultimate of all symbols of love. The gesture, on its own, is not a definition or confirmation of love, but can be a way to show you care for your partner, PDA if you will.

The funny thing for me, or maybe not so funny, is the way some men look at female handbags like there was a contaminable disease they could get by carrying one.

Zoe Saldana ended a 12-year relationship with an engagement to entrepreneur Keith Britton in 2011, which left her heartbroken. She rebounded in a short-lived affair with Bradley Cooper. Now she's with Italian artist Marco Perego. With all the PDA recently, I wish them the best.

JUPITER STRONG AND THE LUNCH LION - A BOOK FOR YOUR YOUNG ONES

Many African parents at home or in the diaspora, are often on the lookout for new books and other material they can use to teach their children good values and which features characters that look like them. The duo of Frank Edwards and Kelly Abel have come up with an idea for a series of books which I think is brilliant! And the fact that the artwork is so fresh and colorful will make it a double hit for children and parents, I personally love it. The first book in the series is “Jupiter Strong and The Lunch Lion”

ABOUT THE BOOK
Jupiter Strong and The Lunch Lion is the story of five year old Jupiter Strong’s first day of “kinneygarden.” Awash with excitement, she can hardly wait to begin her day!
However, Jupiter’s older brother has mischievous plans! He convinces Jupiter that she is in imminent danger by way of “The Lunch Lion” who lurks in the cafeteria, waiting for unsuspecting kindergarteners…
Jupiter uses critical thinking, a sense of self worth and deductive reasoning to unravel the mystery!
The storytelling style is modern, easy to read and perfect for family story time! The artwork is captivating and reminiscent of gallery ready portraits.
With each turn of the page, readers of all ages are invited a bit closer to connect with and get to know the Strong Family.
From the Publishers

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

It was from that mindset the Jupiter Strong series was born. Our goal is to create marketplace viable content, that children will love and parents will appreciate. Our focus with this series was to showcase images of African people in dignifying terms. The world of Jupiter Strong is our contribution to the rebuilding of the global African.

From our series, children will learn critical thinking skills, self love, communal responsibility and have fun doing it!

Each story is socially relevant, and pointed. The ongoing theme is Black love, Black family Pan-Africanism and the destruction of negativity.

Conceived of love, carried with love and delivered with love:

Some other artwork that we've generated in support of our project are below. We realize that marketing a children's book is unique because you've got to appeal to parents, and children. The approach we've taken is to head on attack what we see as negativity, through an age appropriate lens. In example, we have several memes that reverse negative stereotypes into positive displays.

1. Child Support - It's a play on words, and although that term generally conjures up negativity...we've given an alternate view.

2. Baby Mama Drama - More of the same, also a play on words...

3. Love and Hip Hop - See what we're doing here?

MEET THE NEW COUPLES WHO MET ON FACEBOOK

I joined Facebook in 2007 around the time I was about halfway through my master's degree and friends and course-mates were beginning to disperse after the end of our first semester. It was a way to keep in touch and also share some news with them where ever they ended up. Since then I've been in one relationship that ended and then I've got married. In none of those relationships did I use the Facebook option of displaying to the whole world, or at least to one's friends that I was "In a Relationship".

I remember that I did share pictures of my engagement ring after Atala's proposal, and also of pictures of my wedding. The sharing was to custom lists and now the pictures are hidden completely and only I can see them. That is one thing I like about Facebook, the tools it provides to help us, the users, protect our privacy if we want to. But there are other loopholes and oversabi that make me shake my head at them.

For instance, after my page became public and used to network for my books and this blog, I indicated that I was married in order to check mate some of the unwanted and unwarranted attention. Funny enough, Facebook sent out a notice to all my friends and subcribers that I just got married on the day I set that up. Same thing happened when I set up my mum's profile indicating she was married. The public blast is irritating because not only is the date wrong, you may not also want to let everyone know.

And now this new development where Facebook recently announced a new tool called couples pages, an addition to the Friendship Pages. Friendship pages has been around for a while now and if you go to your friend's profile and click on the gear icon to the right, the first option is to "see friendship". You can also access the friendship page by hovering over your friend's name and clicking see friendship in the pop up under their picture.

With the new couples pages, users who have listed that they're 'In A Relationship' with someone will have a new profile created for them and their SO as long as both are on Facebook. What's more, if they browse to www.facebook.com/us, they will be redirected to a timeline or old profile page detailing the relationship.

I don't think I'll be using the couple's page because though I listed I was married, I did not indicate to who and so the relationship cannot be linked to the new page. I wouldn't have minded the new couple's page so much, but the thing is, it is not only the users who are in the relationship that are able to see their couple's page. If you have listed your significant other on your profile, then people can visit your couple's page by clicking on the relationship listing right under your profile picture.

The couples page is automatically set up to include a cover photo if it is timeline, or one or the other's profile pictures, the relationship status (e.g. married or in a relationship since [Year]), your status messages on each other's profile, your mutual friends, pages or groups that both of you like and the events that both of you have shared or attended.

If you are listed as in a relationship and you added who you are in a relationship with, the new pages is automatic and so you cannot reject it. But there is a way to limit what info goes on there, and what people who click over to the page can see. Simply ensure in your privacy settings that your status updates can only be seen by custom people, same with your pictures. You can also set it up so people cannot tag you in pictures.

So what do you think of the new couple's pages? Have you tried it out? Will you use it and even actively share your relationship with others?
